8 Benefits of The Natural Antioxidant Trans-resveratrol

Resveratrol naturally occurring in plants is a mixture of cis-isomers and trans-isomers, but the activity of resveratrol in living organisms depends on the trans-resveratrol entering the blood circulation to achieve. In addition, the vast majority of resveratrol is complex by metal ions during digestion and cannot be absorbed, and only a very small part can enter the circulatory system, so there are fewer trans isomers that are usually naturally present in resveratrol that can really be absorbed into the blood. Therefore, the superiority of all-trans resveratrol is self-evident.


Back in 1939. Japanese Takaoka extracted this substance from the root of the plant Resveratrol and named it resveratrol. In the 1990s, researchers in Connecticut discovered resveratrol in wine. Because the French eat steak, French fries and other unhealthy foods with high cholesterol, but their incidence of cardiovascular disease is only one-third of that of the United States, this phenomenon known as the French paradox, is attributed to the two countries' diet of different content: wine.


Why wine has health benefits has long puzzled people, so the discovery of the University of Connecticut scholars, triggered a worldwide research boom in resveratrol. Resveratrol is a natural antioxidant, which can reduce blood viscosity, inhibit platelet coagulation and vasodilation, maintain blood flow, prevent the occurrence and development of cancer, and has the preventive effect of anti-atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, ischemic heart disease and hyperlipidemia.


I、Life extension

In 2003, HowitzandSinclair published a paper in the prestigious journal Nature in which resveratrol extended the lifespan of yeast, and subsequent studies using reptiles and fruit flies as samples also showed the exact results. The insect experiments have been repeated by many other research groups. In 2007, its life-prolonging effect was demonstrated in mice.


II、Anti-cancer, anti-mutation effect

In 1993, Jayafilake et al. showed that both trans resveratrol and cis-resveratrol have anticancer activity because they can inhibit the activity of protein-tyrosine kinase. Jang and other research groups further pointed out that resveratrol has great anti-cancer activity in the three stages of cancer occurrence, namely initiation, promotion and development, and has inhibition and even reversal effects on the three stages of cancer occurrence:


i、Inhibit initiation. Reduce the formation of free radicals, induce the increase of phase II drug substitution enzymes, and antagonize dioxins;


ii、Inhibit promotion. Inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) and catalase;


iii、Inhibit development. Inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells, induce differentiation of cancer cells, and induce apoptosis of cancer cells.


Resveratrol is expected to be an inhibitor of tyrosine protein kinase PTK. Many medical studies have found that resveratrol has obvious inhibitory effect on various malignant tumor cells such as breast cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, leukemia, ovarian cancer and skin cancer. In January 1997, a research team led by Professor JohnPezzuto of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Illinois at Chicago published a paper entitled "Anti-cancer activity of resveratrol, a natural product of grape" in the American journal Science, causing a sensation in the medical science community.


The paper demonstrated that resveratrol can effectively inhibit cell activity related to various cancer processes. As an antioxidant, antimutagenic and anti-inflammatory agent, resveratrol has been shown to have chemoprophylaxis against cancer, preventing cellular carcinogenesis and preventing the spread of malignant tumors, inhibiting protein chromic kinase, acting as an antimutational agent by blocking kinase function, and inhibiting cytitis. Resveratrol also inhibits cellular inflammation. Inflammation of the cells has been linked to arthritis and other diseases. Resveratrol also inhibits protein tyrosine kinase, which catalyzes tyrosine phosphorylation. This kinase is included in cytoplasmic information transduction within mitogen-regulated cells. The use of resveratrol to inhibit protein tyrosine kinase may have an anti-mutational effect by blocking the kinase function.


III、Cardiovascular protective effect

In the folk, Polygonum cuspidatum, a Chinese medicine rich in resveratrol, has long been used to treat and prevent hyperlipemia and arteriosclerosis. Studies have shown that resveratrol mainly plays a role in anti-atherosclerosis and prevention of coronary heart disease from the following aspects, thus playing a protective role in cardiovascular disease:


i、Regulate blood lipids;

ii、Inhibit platelet agglutination, promote fibrinolysis, and have anti-thrombotic effect;

iii、Protect vascular endothelium and inhibit endothelial cell proliferation;

iv、Protect vascular smoothing machine cells and inhibit their proliferation;

v、Anti-leukocyte effect;

endothelin-1 (ET-1) antagonizing the effects of endothelin-1 (endothelin-1);

vi、Anti-low-density lipoprotein oxidation function.


In experiments investigating endotoxin or thrombin induced platelet activation, it was found that after pre-hatching platelets washed with resveratrol, the adhesion of LPS alone or LPS and thrombin activated platelets to collagen was blocked at physiological plasma concentrations. Platelet adhesion fibrinogen pretreated with resveratrol was also blocked. Resveratrol and its derivatives are a class of plant antitoxins that have been studied more and more in recent years, and their cardiovascular protective effect has gradually become a research hotspot, which is expected to make some contributions in the development of drugs for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. However, its mechanism of action is far from clear and needs further research.


IV、Prevention of heart and liver damage

Resveratrol inhibited the deposition of triglycerides and cholesterol in the liver of mice. It can also increase the levels of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase by inhibiting the lipid peroxidation in the liver of mice. By analyzing these two enzymes in the serum, the diagnostic information of the heart and liver can be obtained.


V、Antithrombotic function

Resveratrol inhibits the synthesis of lipoxygenase, an enzyme found in white blood cells, the heart, brain, lungs and spleen. So resveratrol prevents the formation of blood clots in the blood vessels. And after treatment with clonine, an antihypertensive drug, it also inhibits platelet aggregation.


VI、Boost immune system activity

Resveratrol may also promote burn healing by boosting the immune system. The efficacy of resveratrol in restoring inhibited cellular, humoral, and non-specific immune function in scalded mice has been investigated, providing a drug-dependent immunomodulatory effect on the controlled use of resveratrol. Studies in mice with varying degrees of severe scalding showed that resveratrol restored impaired functions, such as the ability to respond to antigen signals, hyperplasia, interleukin II synthesis, and antibody synthesis through lymphocytes. In severely burned animals treated with controlled resveratrol, neutrophil levels and adhesion returned to near-normal levels, and survival time was extended.


VII、Anti-oxidation, anti-free radical

Resveratrol is a natural antioxidant in plants. It plays an antioxidant role by scavenging or inhibiting the generation of free radicals, inhibiting lipid peroxidation, and regulating the activity of antioxidant-related enzymes. Most of the polyhydroxy stilbenes have anti-oxidation and anti-free radical effects. When resveratrol is at 1.3μg/mL, it can significantly inhibit the autooxidative hemolysis of rat red blood cells and the oxidative hemolysis caused by H2O2, and can significantly inhibit the production of lipid peroxides in vivo and in vitro in the heart, liver, brain and kidney of mice. The antioxidant effects of resveratrol on free radicals and the pharmacological effects on arachidonic acid metabolism have aroused widespread interest, because these physiological metabolism are involved in many physiological diseases closely related to human health, such as atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, viral hepatitis, stomach ulcers, inflammation and allergic reactions.


VIII、Anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects

Resveratrol can inhibit Staphylococcus aureus, catarrhal, Escherichia coli, pseudomonas aeruginosa, orphan virus, herpes simplex virus, enterovirus, Coxsackie group A and B. By reducing platelet adhesion, resveratrol changes platelet activity in the anti-inflammatory process to achieve anti-inflammatory.
