Fucoxanthin is widely found in various algae, marine phytoplankton and shellfish.
1. Anti-tumor effect
i). Skin cancer
Phoxanthin inhibited the enhanced activity of mouse epidermal ornithine decarboxylate induced by tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), and cocoa inhibited the activation of human herpes virus induced by TPA, thereby inhibiting tPA-induced skin tumors.
ii). Colon cancer
Fucoxanthin can inhibit the formation of duodenal carcinoma induced by N-ethyl-N '-nitro-n-nitroguanidine. Fucoxanthin significantly inhibited the growth of colon cancer cell lines, including cacO-2, HT-29 and DLD-1. It can induce DNA fracture of colon cancer cells, promote apoptosis, and inhibit the expression of apoptosis-related protein Bcl-2. Fucoxanthin can dose-dependently inhibit the proliferation of human colon cancer cell line WiDr cells and induce apoptosis by blocking cell cycle in G0/ G1 phase.
iii). Hematologic tumor
Effect of fucoxanthin on hL-60 cell line of acute myeloid leukemia. Fucoxanthin can significantly inhibit the proliferation of HL-60 cells. Effect of fucoxanthin on adult T lymphocytic leukemia. Fucoxanthin and its metabolite fucoxanol inhibit the survival of T cells infected with human T-cell lymphotropic virus Type 1 (HTLV-1) and adult T cell leukemia cells.
iv). Prostate cancer
Fucoxanthin can significantly reduce the survival rate of prostate cancer cells and induce cell apoptosis. Fucoxanthin and its metabolite fucoxanol can inhibit pc-3 cell proliferation, activate caspase-3 and induce apoptosis.
v). Cancer of the liver
Fucoxanwn inhibits the growth of human hepatoma HepG2 cells by blocking cells in G0/G1 phase and inhibiting the phosphorylation of Rb protein at Ser780.
2. Antioxidant effects
Fucoxanthin has a good antioxidant effect, even better than vitamin E and vitamin C. Fucoxanthin has a protective effect on uV-B induced human fibrocyte damage. Fucoxanthin's antioxidant effect is mainly through regulating the activity of Na+-K+ -ATPase, catalase and glutathione in tissues and molecules caused by the deficiency of retinol.
3. Anti-inflammatory effects
Fucoxanthin can inhibit the exudation of endotoxin-induced inflammatory mediators in a dose-dependent manner, and its anti-inflammatory effect is similar to that of prednisolone, indicating that fucoxanthin can inhibit the infiltration of endotoxin-induced inflammation, NO, PGE2 and tumor necrosis factor in mice to a certain extent. Rt-pcr analysis showed that the mRNA expression of NO synthase and cyclooxygenase was inhibited by fucoxanin, and the expression of tumor necrosis factor, leukocyte interleukin IL-1β and IL-6, and mRNA cell survival factor were inhibited by fucoxanin. These results suggest that fucoxanthin may play an important role in multiple inflammatory responses.
4. To lose weight
Fucoxanthin can eliminate fat accumulation in two ways. Fucoxanthin activates a protein called UCP1, which promotes fat breakdown. It also stimulates the liver to produce DHA, which lowers cholesterol levels.
5. Other
Fucoxanthin is contained in sea urchin dietary algae, and has a significant effect on phagocytosis and ovulation of macrophages.
Fucoxanthin is a natural carotenoid, which is difficult to dissolve in water and other solvents with high polarity under neutral conditions. It is easily soluble in non-polar organic solvents and is a fat-soluble pigment. The extraction of pigment from dry powder is usually carried out by adding a small amount of small polar solvent into non-polar solvent.
1. The extraction process of fucoxanthin from kelp: anhydrous ethanol-acetone-petroleum ether (4:1:1) composite solvent was used as the extraction agent, and the ratio of solid to liquid was 40:1 at 40℃ for 2 times, 1h each time. After saponification, fucoxanthin and fucosterol were separated and purified by silica gel column chromatography to obtain a high purity product with a purity of 91.6%.
2. The extraction process of fucoxanthin from Hiqi was as follows :90% ethanol-acetone (3:1) composite solvent was used as the extraction agent, the ratio of liquid to solid was 40:1, the ultrasonic temperature was 65 ℃, and the extraction rate was 1.067mg•g-1. Or using ethanol as entrainment agent, fucoxanthin was extracted from the root of kelp by supercritical CO2, and the purity of crude extract was 5%.

Researchers at Hokkaido University in Japan have shown that fucoxanthin, the pigment of brown seaweed, could be a miracle cure for weight loss. In experiments with mice, the researchers found that by regularly adding food additives containing fucoxanthin, the mice lost 5 to 10 percent of their body weight. The scientists studied more than two hundred laboratory mice. In experiments, scientists found that fucoxanthin can eliminate fat accumulation in two ways. Fucoxanthin activates a protein called UCP1, which promotes fat breakdown. It also stimulates the liver to produce DHA, which lowers cholesterol levels. The scientists also confirmed that the use of fucoxanthin as a concentrated food additive did not cause addiction or any other side effects in laboratory animals.
