Character identification:
The fruit is a round slice, with many curled edges, and uneven, with a diameter of 1 to 2.5 cm and a thickness of 0.2 to 0.4 cm. The outer skin is red to dark red, with fine wrinkles and small gray-white spots. The flesh is dark yellow to light brown. The middle section has 5 light yellow pits, but the pits are mostly absent and hollow. Short and thin fruit stalks or calyx remnants can be seen on some slices.
Slightly fragrant, sour and sweet. The ones with large slices, red skin and thick flesh are better.
Microscopic identification
1. Cross section (1) Cross section of Shanli red fruit, with 1 row of outer pericarp cells, similar to square, outer cuticle, and reddish brown inside. The mesocarp is extremely thick. There are 1-2 rows of brown pigment in the outer parenchyma cells, and the inner parenchyma cells contain starch granules and calcium oxalate square crystals and cluster crystals, with scattered vascular bundles.
(2) The cross-sectional characteristics of hawthorn fruit are similar to those of Shanlihong. The main difference is that most of the pale yellow, round stone cells are scattered in the parenchyma of the mesocarp.
